We Don’t Catch The Smart Ones

When I’m not at church, I’m an Assistant District Attorney. One of my favorite sayings is that we don’t catch the smart crooks. As I was reading case reports this week, I found some further evidence of this.

On October 11, 2007, this particular person went to the Police Department after being notified that there was an indictment/charge for Possession of a Firearm By a Convicted Felon that he needed to be served with. He very generously turned himself in at the police department and was arrested. Obviously, prisoners are searched as part of the arrest process and guess what? Our arrestee had brought with him .45 grams (about 2 or 3 rocks worth) of crack cocaine in his pants pocket. He was subsequently charged with that felony as well.

The moral of our story: Don’t carry crack cocaine with you into the police department.
