I wanted to leave a couple of notes about Sunday’s service for those who listen to the sermons online. Who knows, maybe this will become a regular way for me to include news from the Sunday services for those of you who have to miss once in a while.
This was a pretty heavy sermon from Pastor Charles. Anytime a preacher talks about financial giving, it gets dicey and is sure to turn off some folks. I did hear a few complaints that this sermon had too negative a tone about GPC. I can see that, but I don’t think that was the intent. I believe that Pastor Charles just wanted to paint a real picture about what lies in our future if we don’t step up to what God is calling us to do. I know from other conversations with him that Pastor Charles is encouraged by what is happening at Glenwood.
I think the fear that Glenwood Presbyterian’s doors might have to close for good weighs heavily on some folks, including me, and that the ones who are working so hard don’t want to hear about that, they want to hear the message that God is with us and is leading us and is doing great things in our midst, all of which are true. But I think Pastor Charles was not talking to them yesterday, but was talking to those who are still complacent and thinking that we’ll just keep doing everything the same and it will all be okay.
The highlight of the service for me was during the pastoral prayer time. Pastor Charles explained that it was All Saint’s Day and asked people to call out the names of those who had either died in the Lord recently or had been a past member of Glenwood who had made a significant impact in the life of the church. This was a really moving time as the names of past Glenwood saints were lifted up and the memories of their impact were felt. Names like Merle Mitchell, Grover and Tracy Smith, Mattie Beasley, Dillard Angel, and Claude Bullock. It is because of the foundation and work of these fine people that I (and many others) work so hard to make GPC all that it should be.
